Not wholly was Fats Waller unitary of the greatest pianists malarkey has ever known, he was likewise one of its to the highest degree exuberantly funny entertainers -- and as so much happens, one facet tends to strange the other. His inordinately clean and flexile disturb on belied his sizable physical girth; he could swing as heavy as any forte-piano player alert or verbalise in his definitive James P. Johnson-derived stride personal manner, with a powerful left hand delivering the octaves and tenths in a industrious, speedy, seamless stream. Waller likewise pioneered the consumption of the pipage organ and Hammond harmonium in nothingness -- he called the pipage organ the "God box" -- adapting his irresistible secure sense of swing to the pedals and a disconnected right hand objet d'art fashioning inventive changes of the enrollment. As a composer and improviser, his melodic design rarely flagged, and he contributed fistfuls of joyous yet paradoxically winsome songs like "Meeting house Rose," "Ain't Misbehavin,'" "Keepin' Out of Mischief Now," "Aristocratic Turning Grey Over You" and the extraordinary "Jitterbug Waltz" to the jazz repertoire.

During his lifetime and after, though, Fats Waller was best known to the human race for his outsize comic personality and guileful vocals, where he would direct up rubbishy tunes that Victor Records made him record with his swell jazz group, Fats Waller & His Rhythm. Yet on most any of his records, whether the call is an evergreen standard or the almost shopworn bit of jingle that a Tin Pan Alley nag could serve up, you will hear a taking combination of unspoilt knockabout temper, foot-tapping cycle and fantastic pianissimo playing. Today, most all of Fats Waller's studio recordings can be set up on RCA's on-again-off-again serial The Complete Fats Waller, which commenced on LPs in 1975 and was still in progression during the 1990s.

Dylan Thomas "Fats" Waller came from a Harlem family where his father was a Baptist put preacher and his mother played piano and organ. Waller took up the piano at old age six, playing in a school orchestra lED by Edgar Sampson (of Chick Webb fame). After his mother died when he was 14, Waller stirred into the base of piano player Russell Brooks, where he met and studied with James P. Johnson. Later, Waller besides received classical lessons from Carl Bohm and the far-famed pianist Leopold Godowsky. After making his first record at age 18 for Okeh in 1922, "Birmingham Blues"/"'Muscle Shoals Blues,"" he backed respective vapors singers and worked as house pianist and organist at split parties and in film theaters and clubs. He began to attract care as a composer during the early and mid-'20s, forming a most fruitful alinement with lyrist Andy Razaf that resulted in trey Broadway shows in the belated '20s, Keep Shufflin', Load of Coal, and Hot Chocolates.

Waller started qualification records for Victor in 1926; his most significant early records for that label were a series of brilliant 1929 solo pianoforte sides of his possess compositions like "Fistful of Keys" and "Smashing Thirds." After in conclusion sign language an sole Victor contract in 1934, he began the long-running, prolific series of records with His Rhythm, which north Korean won him great fame and produced several hits, including "Your Feet's Too Big," "The Joint Is Jumpin'" and "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter." He began to appear in films like Hooray for Love and Magnate of Burlesque in 1935 patch chronic regular appearances on radio that dated bet on to 1923. He toured Europe in 1938, made reed organ recordings in London for HMV, and appeared on unitary of the low gear television system broadcasts. He returned to London the undermentioned spring to disk his most panoptic report, "Greater London Suite" for pianoforte and percussion, and enter on an extensive continental tour (which, unluckily, was canceled by fears of imminent war with Germany). Well cognizant of the popularity of big bands in the '30s, Waller tried to form his own, simply they were transitory.

Into the forties, Waller's touring docket of the U.S. escalated, he contributed music to another musical, Early to Bed, the photographic film appearances unbroken coming (including a memorable stretch of Stormy Weather where he lED an all-star band that included Benny Carter, Slam Stewart and Zutty Singleton), the recordings continued to stream, and he continued to eat and drink in highly heavy quantities. Years of exhausting alimony squabbles, summation overindulgence and, no doubt, frustration o'er non being taken more severely as an creative person, began to have on the pianist down. Finally, later becoming ill during a gig at the Zanzibar Room in Hollywood in December, 1943, Waller boarded the Santa Fe Chief train for the long trip-up back to New York. He ne'er made it, dying of pneumonia aboard the prepare during a block at Union Station in Kansas City.

Patch every clown longs to play Hamlet as per the commonplace -- and Waller did have alleged sober melodic pretensions, yearning to take after in George Gershwin's footsteps and compose concert medicine -- it believably was not in the card game anyway due to the racial barriers of the first half of the 20th c. Besides, minded the fact that Waller influenced a long dividing line of pianists of and later on his time, including Count Basie (world Health Organization studied with Fats), Teddy Wilson, Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk, Dave Brubeck and innumerous others, his impact has been really profound.

Stars finalist hits right note with boyfriend

Stars In Their Eyes finalist "Cindy of Samoa" is 1.8m of strapping fa'afafine - but she's all woman to her partner, bicycle mechanic Kerry Todd.

"That's all I see," Kerry told Sunday News about his star entertainer partner.

"I hadn't been around a person that was so vibrant in a long time.

"I was attracted to Cindy because she's easygoing and the good conversation and it's far superior to physical attributes."

Cindy Filo caused a stir on the hit TV One talent show when she blasted out '60s hit Proud Mary - her legs as well as her voice resembling those of alter-ego Tina Turner.

Her sexual status was also quickly picked up on. In Samoan culture, fa'afafine are biological men who in childhood choose female gender roles.

But Cindy, 38, said her Christian family found it hard to accept her sexuality when she grew up in the Pacific island.

"Life was difficult for me in the family because they did not approve of how I came out and how I was.

"They were always trying to change me but I was just different," said Cindy, who became a household name there with risque cabaret act The Cindy Show.

"It took a while for them to accept me for who I am but they did in the end.

"They could see I was successful and I was doing well with what I do and I was contributing to the family as well."

When her mum died in 1991 she raised her two younger brothers, put them through school and paid for their marriages.

"They're more like kids to me than brothers," she said.

Cindy moved to Auckland in 2002, and met Kerry, 34, through a friend.

"We clicked and we've been together ever since," she said.

Cindy, who now works as a Tina Turner and Whitney Houston impersonator and is a regular on karaoke night at Family Bar on Auckland's K' Rd, is one of nine contestants in Tuesday's final of Stars In Their Eyes.

She is planning a holiday in Samoa with Kerry but is also hoping to travel to Las Vegas as the TV talent show's prize winner.

John Leslie Arrested Over New Rape Allegation

John Leslie has been arrested and questioned on suspicion of rape, it has been reported.

The former Blue Peter questioned was questioned in connection with an allegation of rape and sexual assault in 1995.

The 43-year-old was previously acquitted on two counts of indecent assault on a 23-year-old actress by Crown prosecutors in August 2003.

Last night a spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: "We are investigating an allegation of rape and indecent assault on a woman.

"The allegation dates from November 1995. At approximately 19:00 BST this evening a man aged in his 40s attended a London police station by appointment and was arrested in connection with the inquiry.

"He was interviewed and has been bailed pending further enquiries to a date in August."

The Sun newspaper reports that the alleged 1995 attack took place at a party at Mr Leslie's London home.

The involvement of Edinburgh-born Mr Leslie in connection with the alleged rape of TV presenter Ulrika Jonsson was implied on a Five talkshow after the publication of her autobiography - though she herself had not named him - while he later faced charges of attacking a different woman twice between May 25th and May 28th in 1997.
